What is asbestos and why is it dangerous
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral. After discovering that it had many great properties like high tensile strength and durability combined with extreme heat resistance, manufacturers began using it in building materials to make them more durable and increase the insulating abilities of these materials. These materials include, but are not limited to, floor tiles and vinyl, drywall, joint compound, exterior siding, shingles, fireproofing insulation, concrete pipes, and more.
For decades, we produced asbestos containing building materials (ACMs) without knowing the effect it could have on human health. Eventually, we found that exposure asbestos fibers by inhaling them can cause a variety of diseases including asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma – all of which can be undetectable for years. After an ACM or PACM (presumed asbestos containing material) is disturbed, asbestos fibers can be released.
OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1926.1101(b) “Disturbance means activities that disrupt the matrix of ACM or PACM, crumble or pulverize ACM or PACM, or generate visible debris from ACM or PACM.”
In order to avoid health concerns by the accidental disturbance of ACM or PACM, please contact Capsule Corps to schedule a professional inspection to identify if there is asbestos in your home or business and whether it requires removal.
